As preparations for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 begin, discussions around a possible change in player selection format have intensified. According to sources, three PSL franchises have formally urged league management to consider introducing a player auction system for the upcoming season.

Karachi, Islamabad, and Quetta Support Auction Model
Sources revealed that Karachi Kings, Islamabad United, and Quetta Gladiators are in favor of moving away from the traditional draft system and adopting an auction-based model for PSL 11. The franchises have reportedly communicated their position to the PSL administration as early planning discussions get underway.
Concerns Over Direct Signings and Player Categories
In addition to pushing for an auction, the franchises have raised several operational and policy-related questions. Among the key concerns is the lack of clarity regarding direct player signings, including:
-
How the direct signing mechanism will work
-
How many players teams will be allowed to sign directly
The franchises have also asked for clarification on who will finalize player categories and have requested that teams be consulted before categories are officially locked.
Draft vs Auction: Franchises Divided
Discussions within franchise circles are now focusing on whether the PSL should continue with the existing draft format or shift to an auction system, similar to other major T20 leagues around the world.
Franchises backing the auction model believe the draft system favors teams with early picks, allowing them to secure top players more easily. They argue that an auction would create a fairer and more competitive environment, giving teams better control over targeting their preferred players through bidding.
Not All Teams Agree
However, there is no unanimous agreement among PSL franchises. Sources indicate that Lahore Qalandars prefer retaining the current draft system, citing its balance and structure. Meanwhile, Peshawar Zalmi have yet to formally communicate their stance on the matter.
PSL Management Yet to Respond
Franchises are still awaiting an official response from PSL management regarding the proposed changes. So far, no formal decision or statement has been issued by the league authorities.
With PSL 11 planning still in its early stages, the debate over draft versus auction is expected to continue, potentially shaping the future direction of Pakistan’s premier T20 tournament.
