Punjab has taken a major step toward energy efficiency and sustainable development as work has officially started to shift hundreds of government schools to solar power. The initiative aims to reduce electricity consumption and operational costs while promoting clean energy solutions across the province.

256 Schools to Go Solar in First Phase
Under the project, 256 government schools will be converted to solar energy systems at a total cost of Rs. 700 million. In the first phase, priority will be given to higher secondary schools, which consume more electricity due to larger campuses and facilities.
Solar Conversion in Lahore
As part of the initial rollout, 15 schools in Lahore will be shifted to solar power. Officials believe this will significantly reduce the electricity burden and ensure uninterrupted power supply for academic activities.
Project Capacity and Oversight
The total solar capacity of the project will be 5,515 kilowatts, making it one of the larger solar initiatives in the education sector. The project is being completed under the supervision of the Punjab Energy Department, ensuring technical quality and timely execution.
EV Charging Stations Also Planned
In addition to solarizing schools, the plan also includes the installation of 50 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, reflecting Punjab’s broader vision to promote renewable energy and electric mobility.
Long-Term Benefits for Education Sector
Officials say the initiative will not only lower electricity bills but also contribute to environmental protection, while helping schools maintain reliable power during peak hours and outages.
