Major Update for Solar Meter Users in Pakistan

A major relief has been announced for solar net-metering consumers across Pakistan, as a new meter replacement policy has now been officially approved for all power distribution companies, including Lahore Electric Supply Company.

The decision aims to address long-standing complaints related to burnt, faulty, or non-functional green meters, especially for consumers who have shifted to solar energy.

Major Update for Solar Meter Users in Pakistan

🏛️ NEPRA Approves Solar Meter Replacement Policy

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has formally approved a nationwide policy under which:

  • Burnt or faulty bi-directional green meters will be replaced

  • Power companies will be bound to change meters within two months

  • Consumers will not be penalized during the replacement period

This policy applies uniformly to LESCO and all other DISCOs operating in Pakistan.

🔄 Relief for Burnt or Faulty Green Meters

Under the newly approved framework:

  • If a solar meter becomes damaged or burnt, consumers will be charged average export units for up to two months

  • The average will be calculated based on last year’s export data

  • This ensures solar users do not face financial loss due to technical faults

NEPRA has described this as a temporary relief mechanism until meter replacement is completed.

🔬 Meter Testing & Unit Adjustment Explained

According to the policy:

  • Faulty or burnt meters will be removed and sent to a laboratory

  • A detailed lab inspection report will be prepared

  • Based on findings, exported solar units may be adjusted further

  • Any discrepancies will be corrected after verification

This step is meant to ensure transparency and accuracy in billing.

⏱️ Two-Month Deadline for Power Companies

NEPRA has directed all distribution companies to:

  • Replace defective green meters within two months

  • Ensure uninterrupted net-metering benefits

  • Avoid delays that previously caused billing disputes

Failure to comply may result in regulatory action.

📌 Why This Decision Matters for Solar Users

This policy is especially important because:

  • Pakistan has seen a massive shift toward solar energy

  • Net-metering users often faced billing issues due to meter faults

  • The new rules protect consumers from unexpected charges and delays

Energy experts say this move will restore confidence in Pakistan’s solar net-metering system.
