WhatsApp Launches New Strict Security Feature

WhatsApp Launches New Strict Security Feature

Meta has introduced a new security feature on WhatsApp, named “Strict Account Settings,” aimed at protecting users from cyberattacks and unauthorized access. The optional lockdown-style feature automatically activates enhanced privacy and restricted settings to make accounts more secure.

This move comes as Meta faces a legal case over alleged false privacy claims regarding WhatsApp.

Key Features of Strict Account Settings

Once enabled, the feature automatically implements multiple security measures:

  • Calls from unknown numbers are silenced automatically.

  • Images and files from strangers are blocked.

  • Link previews are disabled for non-contacts.

  • High-volume unknown messages are automatically blocked.

  • Two-step verification is enabled automatically.

  • Security notifications alert users if a contact’s security code changes.

Enhanced Privacy Controls

With the new settings:

  • Last seen, online status, profile photo, and About are visible only to contacts.

  • Only selected contacts can add you to groups.

  • Profile links are blocked for non-contacts.

Who Benefits the Most?

Meta says this feature is particularly useful for:

  • Journalists

  • Human rights activists

  • Public figures

These users are at higher risk of hacking or surveillance, and the feature helps limit unnecessary contact and protect sensitive accounts.

How to Enable the Feature

Users can activate the feature via:
Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Strict Account Settings

Note: This setting can only be enabled on the primary mobile device, not via WhatsApp Web or Windows App.

Context Behind the Launch

The launch comes amid a lawsuit claiming Meta stores, analyzes, and accesses private WhatsApp conversations despite promises of privacy. WhatsApp head Will Cathcart dismissed these allegations, calling the lawsuit baseless and aimed at headlines.

Meta emphasizes that this optional but highly effective security tool provides users with greater control and protection against cyber threats.
