Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face higher electricity rates just before the holy month of Ramadan, as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to NEPRA for a monthly fuel price adjustment.
If approved, the adjustment could make electricity 48 paisa per unit more expensive for one month.
CPPA Details Fuel and Electricity Generation Costs
According to the CPPA submission, 8.487 billion units of electricity were produced in December, while 8.208 billion units were supplied to distribution companies. The cost of electricity per unit in December was reported at Rs. 9.62.
The generation mix for December included:
-
Hydel (Hydropower): 18.07%
-
Local Coal: 13.99%
-
Imported Coal: 10.13%
-
Natural Gas: 11.20%
-
Imported Gas: 17.24%
-
Nuclear: 25.05%
NEPRA to Decide on Tariff Adjustment
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will hold a full hearing on the CPPA request. After the hearing, a final decision on electricity price increase or decrease will be announced.
Officials have advised consumers to stay informed and monitor updates from NEPRA, as the tariff change could affect household and industrial electricity bills during Ramadan.
